CHAPTER 22

Zoe gazed out the window from the passenger side of the car and watched the darkened Berlin streets as they drove towards their home. It had been a wonderful day spent at Wilbur and Marlene’s house. Relaxing and fun; just the tonic they needed before the stresses of the war crimes trial the next day. It allowed Eva to be with family and to have something else to occupy her mind. Well, it had actually been only half a day, since it took Eva most of the morning to get Zoe out of bed. Tiredness had nothing to do with Zoe’s desire to stay in bed. It had everything to do with keeping Eva relaxed, and it had worked.

After a late lunch at the Muller residence it was a case of catching up with family. It was the perfect day without mention of the court case, although Eva and Wilbur had gone outside to smoke their cigars and talk.

“Looks like there’s a blackout.”

Eva glanced at Zoe and nodded. “Marlene said they were getting a few of them. It’s extended to Dahlem as well.”

“The dark makes this place look more sinister than it is.”

“It’s not a sinister place anymore, love. It’s just a city.”

“Under siege,” Zoe replied and glanced at Eva, who briefly met her gaze before turning back to the road ahead.

“The Americans won’t let anything happen to West Berlin.”

“I trust the Americans about as much as I trust the British. If it’s in their interests to keep West Berlin safe, they will. If not…”

“You have to let go of your distrust of the British.”

“They started the Civil War.”

“The Greeks started their own civil war, love. The British had a hand in it, but the Greeks started it.”

“What about here? The British and the Americans will just abandon West Berlin to Russia.”

Eva chuckled. Zoe loved having these conversations with Eva because it got Eva out of thinking about anything else. “It won’t happen, Zo.”

“Why?”

“The Americans are not going to give up territory to the Russians. There is a Cold War going on and the last thing the Americans want is to appear weak.”

“West Berlin is in the middle of East Germany.”

“Yes, it is, but it has the most powerful country in the world protecting it.”

“The Greeks are not in West Berlin, Evy.” There was a moment of silence before Eva laughed out loud. It was a sound Zoe loved and it made her smile.

“You make me laugh.” Eva touched Zoe’s hand. Zoe took Eva’s hand and gently squeezed it.

“That’s my plan. So, what were you and Wilbur talking about outside?”

“A few things…he seemed to have been saving up all the good things till I got here.”

“What? I told him not to upset you!”

The car stopped at an intersection patrolled by the police since the traffic lights were out. Eva turned her head and regarded Zoe for a moment, the light from a nearby car illuminating her eyes. “Don’t tell me you asked Wilbur not to say anything to upset me.
